Affordable, high quality child care is vitally important to child well-being, work-family balance and women’s labour force participation. NATSEM research into child care has included work assessing perceptions of the availability and affordability of child care and estimating the impact of the Commonwealth Child Care Benefit on the use and costs of formal child care services and determining the labour supply effects of child care prices.
NATSEM researchers have also been involved in projects that examine staffing trends among the sector. A project to examine trends in staffing in Outside School Hours Care services in 2010 was undertaken for a consortium of community-sector organisations, highlighting the high-turnover in staff and nature of the industry. Recent work for UnitingCare Burnside explored patterns and social gradients of Outside School Hours Care (OSHC).
NATSEM has one of the strongest team in Australia in relation to child care research, with published academic and policy research at the frontier of child care research in Australia and internationally.
