Population and Demography

Australia’s population is nearly 23 million people and is growing by 1 new person every minute and a half. Demography is the statistical study of human populations and sub-populations. It encompasses the study of the size, structure, and distribution of these populations, and spatial and/or temporal changes in them in response to birth, migration, ageing and death.

This research area covers much of the work NATSEM is undertaking using small area estimation models - SpatialMSM. This model not only allows us to derive small area estimates of cross-tabulated data for small areas from Australian surveys, but also allows us to derive projections of these data using population projections from each of the States and labour force projections from the Commonwealth Treasury. Further information on this model can be found in the SpatialMSM page.

This research area also covers NATSEM’s dynamic microsimulation model, APPSIM. This model is designed to assist the Commonwealth in planning for future population growth and estimates characteristics of Australia’s future population. More information on APPSIM can be found in the APPSIM model page.

NATSEM is also doing extensive work on ageing and children, and information on this work can be found in the Older Australians page and the Children and Youth page.
