Indonesia

Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world in terms of population and the world’s largest archipelagic state, with tremendous spatial diversity not only economically but also in term of culture and ethnicity. The country has experienced various development phases and challenges since the financial and economic crisis in 1997, and on through the period of decentralisation since 1999.

As part of Indonesia’s commitment to achieve its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the country has increased its target for poverty reduction from 13 per cent in 2010 to 10 per cent in 2014. This, together with the importance of spatial diversity and regional development, has seen NATSEM researchers to investigating a range of related questions on this topic. For example:

  • What are the principal drivers of poverty in Indonesia?
  • What are the patterns of regional poverty in Indonesia?
  • What policies and strategies can be employed to alleviate poverty in Indonesia?
  • What are the regional growth determinants in Indonesia?
  • What evidence is there of a concentration in regional development in Indonesia?

NATSEM researchers have substantial expertise on topics of economic development and socio-economic analysis in Indonesia. The links on this page will allow you to explore related projects and publications in this area.
