Abstract

Population forecasts are normally conducted using a demographic model, and provide simple Age-Sex forecasts of population. Demographic models do not incorporate anything on how many people can live in an area, given physical, environmental and economic boundaries. Spatial Decision Support Systems model urban populations at a much more detailed level, incorporating some of these boundaries. This paper describes how a spatial microsimulation method could be used as input into a spatial decision support system, and shows a potential application for the city of Canberra in Australia.
